In our photographic and televisual culture, memory is most often associated with images. But while photos can forever capture the look of an event, memory is often better stimulated through senses other than vision. Religious apparel such as bris outfits or christening gowns are mementos that can kindle memory with a touch long after the event at which they were worn.

Storing and Preserving Religious Apparel

Preservation bags are the best way to protect your child's baptism dress or first communion outfit from the effects of time. Preservation bags protect religious outfits from dust, dirt, light, and chemicals that can cause fading or discoloration.

There are two materials commonly used to make christening set preservation bags: cotton and Tyvek. Most preservation bags for children's religious apparel are made from 100% unbleached muslin. Button closures and padded hangers provide sealing and storage.

Tyvek is a synthetic material manufactured by DuPont. Tyvek is made from olefin, which is strong, lightweight, and abrasion-resistant. A preservation bag made from Tyvek will be water-resistant and acid and lint free.

Storage Tips for Children's Religious Outfits

To best preserve your child's bris outfit or christening dress, follow these simple storage tips:

  • Avoid preservation bags with zippers and snaps. The metal parts will corrode.
  • Flat storage is better than hanging. Wire hangers in particular will create bumps or marks on fabric when used for long-term storage.
  • Do not store christening gowns or baptism outfits in plastic or vinyl containers. If paper-based storage products are used, make sure they're acid-free.
  • Do not keep a preservation bag in a warm or humid area. Look for a cool and dry location such as a closet or storage chest.
  • If your preservation bag allows, related keepsakes and accessories should be stored in the bottom of the bag.
